Summit Series II FAQ’s

  • Which battery profile should my charger use?
    • The recommended battery profiles for different types of batteries are listed in the ChargerConnect™ App Users Guide which is located within the app (drop down menu>help)  and on our public website
  • What is a battery profile?
    • Battery profiles are series of charge instructions that battery chargers use to fully recharge the energy that is stored within a battery.  Some batteries require Current – Voltage – Current (IEI) charge routines while others may require Current – Voltage – Float (IE) charge instructions
  • Can I change my charger’s battery profile myself?
    • Battery profiles for Summit II chargers can be changed using the ChargerConnect App.  Instructions  for this procedure are listed in the users guide
  • There are flashing lights on my charger, what do they mean?
    • The LED Lights on your charger indicate the charge status, complete charge or any faults that may have occurred during a charge cycle.  Please see the Summit II users manual for a complete list of these LED light codes
  • Where do I find a list of the profiles that are pre-loaded into my charger?
    • The battery profiles can be viewed in the ChargerConnect App.  See the Apps user manual for instruction to identify the profiles that are pre-loaded into each charger.
  • Can I purchase extra DC Cordsets for my charger?
    • Yes, additional DC Cordsets can be purchased by contacting the Lester Electrical sales department at 402.477.8988
  • Can the charger use 120 /240 VAC?
    • Summit II Chargers are design to accept both 120 and 240 VAC input
  • Can I charge lithium batteries with a Summit II Charger?
    • Yes,  The standard Wet Cell battery profiles are used (IEI) and the maximum voltage is regulated by the lithium battery controller that is part of your  power cell package
  • What is CAN bus?
    • Controller Area Network (CAN) is a communication protocol that allows devices to communicate with each other without a host computer.  Many electrical vehicles  use this form of communication to monitor  various systems o make the vehicle operate efficiently
  • Does my charger have CAN bus?
    • All Summit II Chargers are CAN bus compliant
  • Why is there a blue wire do on my onboard wiring harness?
    • On-board Summit II Chargers are shipped with a universal mounting harness.  The blue wire in the harness is used to control an external lockout device that will keep the vehicle from moving during a charge cycle.  Please consult the vehicle manufacturer for information in regards to this connection
  • How long will it take my multi-volt charger to detect the proper voltage required?
    • Multi-volt chargers will detect the battery pack voltage within 10 minutes of initial power up.  To determine the status of this feature, establish the blue tooth connection using the ChargerConnect App, go to the dashboard and find the section below the fuel gauge that indicates a percentage of Auto Battery Voltage Detection.  When this measurement reaches 100% the battery voltage has been detected
  • What is the difference between onboard and shelf mode charger settings?
    • Onboard chargers initiate the charge sequence when AC voltage is detected by the charger.  Shelf mode charger require the detection of DC voltage to initiate the charge
  • Can I install remote LED’s on my Summit II Charger?  
    • An accessory package may be purchased to install remote LED’s on any Summit II Charger.  These remote LED’s allow the user access to valuable  information if the charger is installed in an area without easy access  
  • How does “storage mode” work?
    • “Storage Mode” is a feature that comes with all  Lester Electrical E-series, E-Series II, Summit and Summit II golf cart battery chargers.  Once a manual charge session is complete,  the charger goes into its “storage mode” feature when it remains connected to the golf cart and the AC Plug remains plugged into the wall. When in storage mode, it will charge your batteries only when the following two situations occur (1) the battery voltage drops to a certain predefined voltage AND (2) 10-15 days have elapsed.
  • How do I connect the Lester on-board charger to my vehicle  batteries?
    • The positive wire from the charger must be connected to the first positive(+) terminal of the series battery pack (Battery #1), and the negative (-) wire must be connected to the last negative battery terminal of the circuit
  • Can I use my charger (or the Lester chargers) with a  GFCI outlet?
    • Yes, Lester Electrical chargers have controlled current production so they can be used in application where the AC power sources is controlled by a GFCI wall output
  • Can I swap out plugs on my 36V or 48V charger?
    • The DC output plugs used by Lester Electrical have different current ratings, so its important to install a DC Cordset that is rated for the current that can be produced by the Lester Charger.  Contact Lester Technical Support for DC Cordset current ratings before swapping DC Plugs
  • What if my batteries’ voltage is too low, can they still be charged?
    • There is a minimum start voltage for all Lester Chargers.  Lestronic 2 chargers require a DC Battery voltage of at least 70% of the rated voltage to initiate a charge sequence.  Newer designed chargers such a Summit or E-Series require approximately 15 VDC for startup
  • Can I leave my charger plugged in for long periods of time?
    • Yes,  the Lester Electrical Battery Charger can remained plugged into AC power for extended periods of time.  It is a good idea to use an AC Outlet surge suppressor if the charger will be left unattended for long periods of time
  • Does my charger automatically stop charging once the batteries are fully charged?
    • Yes,  All Lester Automatic battery chargers will terminate the charge sequence when the batteries being charged have met 100% capacity
  • Should the  charger make noise while charging?
    • Ferroresonant and SCR Chargers  all use a transformers  to produce the current required to charge batteries, so when these types of chargers are producing current, you will hear a low level “buzz” emitting from the charger.  Summit and Summit II Chargers are “High Frequency” chargers that do not use transformers, so the LED Lights are used to verify proper operation
  • Why is my battery charger showing a red flashing light?
    • Red Flashing lights indicate a fault has occurred during the charge cycle.  Quick Flashing (multiple  flashes per second) are less critical than slow flashing (once a second) .  If the charger is flashing a slow red light, it has terminate the charger cycle and further troubleshooting steps are required
  • How do I find the owners manual for my charger?
    • All manuals for Lester Chargers are available on our public website.  It may be easier to search for this information using the Charger Series type (Summit II, E-series, etc.)
  • How long does it take to charge a golf cart?
    • Depending on the state of battery discharge, it can take ups to 13 hours to fully charge a set of batteries
  • Should I charge the golf cart after each use?
    • For extended battery life, the  golf cart batteries should be charged after every use
  • Should I charge the golf cart in “Run” or “Tow”?
    • Your batteries should always be charged with the cart in “Run” Mode.. Your golf cart should be switched to “Run” anytime you are using the cart or charging your batteries. “Tow” is only for long term storage (if you are planning to remove the batteries)
  • Can I use a 36 volt charger on a 48 volt golf cart?
    • No, a charger rated at 36 volts will not charge a vehicle that is designed to run on 48 volts.  If a 36VDC charger is connected to a 48 volt cart, the charger will display an “under voltage” error within 10 minutes.  
  • Where on the golf cart do I install a Lester onboard battery charger?
    • Lester onboard chargers are typically installed within the battery compartment of golf cart, however, if space inside the compartment is limited, the charger can be installed in the tray behind the seats or in the compartment behind golf club holders.  
  • Do I have 6v, 8v or 12v golf cart batteries
    • The batteries in your vehicle should be clearly marked with your voltage output, but for wet chemistry batteries, count the number of water fill hole at the top of the battery.  6 volt batteries have 3 fill holes, 8 volt have 4, and 12 volt have 6
  • What is a series battery circuit?  
    • A series battery circuit is laid out where the negative (-)  terminal of a battery is connected to the positive (+)  terminal of the next battery, then the negative of that battery is connected to the positive of the following battery.  This sequence continues until all batteries are connected in this sequence.  The voltage of all connected batteries can then be added together to determine the complete pack voltage of the connected batteries
  • What is the difference between Wet-Cell & AGM Batteries?
    • Conventional, wet lead-acid batteries require a constant current finish at the end of the charge cycle. Using a charger designed for sealed/maintenance-free type batteries on conventional wet lead-acid batteries will cause increasingly shorter run times and possible loss of battery life due to undercharging. Gel/sealed lead-acid and AGM types of maintenance-free batteries require a constant voltage finish at the end of their charge cycle. Using a charger designed for conventional wet lead-acid batteries on these types of maintenance free batteries will result in loss of battery life and capacity due to overcharging.
